I always look forward to when citrus is in season, in particular Grapefruit. Grapefruit is much maligned by some because of its tartness, but I absolutely love eating a fresh grapefruit each morning. I mean really, how could you say anything bad about a fruit whose botanical name is “Citrus Paradisi?” The name alone sounds so refreshing!

The fruit contains many vitamins, especially vitamin C, lycopene for the Pink and Red varieties and is a good source of fiber. Grapefruit lowers cholesterol, and can increase the potency of some drugs such as statins, so be sure to read prescription label warnings.

It also has diuretic and laxative properties as it stimulates and loosens the lower bowel.

When I first became interested in essential oils, I discovered the amazing skin benefits of grapefruit essential oil, mostly by accident. I was trying to come up with a refreshing smelling massage oil blend when I formulated Eugenia Essentials’ “Baby’s Butt.” I had been experiencing sore knees, so I started using the blend on them daily. I am embarrassed to admit this, but I always suffered from “chicken skin”…horrible little red bumps on my knees and elbows. After about a week, I noticed how incredibly smooth the skin on my knees felt! (Hence the name “Baby’s Butt”) I started using it on my elbows too. It is my belief, the grapefruit healed my condition!

Grapefruit essential oil blends well with many other oils. It’s a wonderful detoxer and tonic for the kidneys and lymphatic system. For its astringent qualities, try it in a facial toner, cream, hair rinse, or soap. To assist circulation it’s great in bath salts or in your favorite carrier oil for massage. Grapefruit essential oil is anti-depressant. Its aroma is bright, stimulating and uplifting. I would not recommend using it before bedtime as it may interfere with sleep due to its diuretic properties and stimulating effects.

Let’s hear from some readers. Have you used grapefruit essential oil or Eugenia Essentials “Baby’s Butt” blend? What types of products do you like it in?  What has been your experience with grapefruit?
