Reflections on a birthday

Well today marks the entry of another year of living for me.  I had to make a visit to the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew my license and photo.  They now require like 10 forms of ID to assure them you are a legal resident and not an illegal alien or terrorist.  I was determined my new license photo would look good, so I spent an hour in front of the mirror fixing my “do” and make-up.  All to no avail! I swear those DMV cameras are designed to take unflattering photos.  My new license photo is horrible.  And of course the wind blew my hair and it looked terrible.  Then it was on to the bank where I cashed in a CD and they tried to sign me up for yet another credit card with higher interest than the one I currently have…but hey this one has 6 months zero interest and you earn points.  Points?  How about repaying me some of that bail out money I lent you!  Never mind, let me take this CD money and go spend it in the grocery store.

Yet life as I know it is pretty good.  When I got home, I had several emails from people who really count in my life wishing me a happy birthday.  I have a lot to be thankful for.  I’ve made some great friends and been to some beautiful places.  The other night I got out some photos of my 2004 trip to Ireland with my sister.  Looking at them brought back great memories of the trip and I couldn’t help but smile. Now talk about bad hair…the first day we arrived I remember how even though I had a special electrical adapter for hair dryers etc, when I plugged in my curling iron it shot off the dresser and melted!  My sister and I fell on the floor laughing. There were a lot of moments like that during the entire trip. I guess we were really living in the present. It was wonderful.

It’s funny how when you are younger, you think you will always be able to remember the times and events as they occurred, but in truth, age and time do dim the memory.  So yes, take lots of pictures because time goes by faster than the blink of an eye. And of course if I’m lucky enough to reach the age of ninety, I’ll have the good sense to hire a driver and stay out of the DMV.
